When a family comes to us for counseling, here is what to expect. The counselor will interact with each member of your family, and listen to your definition of the problem and struggles you want to address. She or he will gather information to gain a deeper understanding of your challenges. For the first several sessions, the counselor will work with you to lay the foundation of a safe, trusting, caring relationship and setting for you to explore your concerns.
The counselor will select tools to explore and address practical skills and patterns of relating surrounding the identified problem. For example, he or she may guide you in an activity such as family sculpting, in which each family member is given the chance to arrange family members into positions (sometimes using props) that picture that person’s feelings, perception, and experience of family life. You might be guided in listening to the different perspectives of various family members, and practice skills in problem-solving.
As you uncover deeper truths and wounds, the counselor will help you invite Jesus Christ into your sessions. As a family group, you will have times of deep healing prayer that will touch individual members, as well as your family as a whole. Transformation will happen. You will end up with tools, skills, and experiences of God’s healing touch that will create lasting, positive change and move you toward wholeness.
