When you begin your journey with us, here is what to expect. A counselor will partner with you to gather relevant information to help in understanding your goals, challenges, and the context for your problems. He or she will create a safe, understanding, and compassionate setting for you to explore your strengths and resources. The counselor will use a variety of tools to help you practically address your struggles.
For example, the therapist might guide you to identify errors in thinking, to isolate lies you may have come to believe about yourself and about how life works. You might explore childhood experiences, family rules, or some history of your family’s patterns of thinking, behaving, and interacting through two or three generations.
Your counselor will create a safe, understanding, and compassionate setting for you to explore your journey.
As you are ready and open to going further, your counselor will help you find a safe place to meet with God. Here is where Grace Like a River’s distinctive approach takes you far beyond traditional counseling. In the safety of the trust you have developed with your counselor, you will begin to offer the core of your wounds, the very roots of your struggles and problems to Jesus Christ. During these times of prayer and listening, you will experience the transforming and healing power of the Holy Spirit that comes from God being present with you as you invite him to touch you at the core of your pain.
No human therapist is able to touch and heal the core wounds we all have. Only God has the medicine that cures us on these deep levels. As a result, you will have gained insight and new skills that you can apply to life’s challenges. You will learn ways to change your thinking so you can move toward freedom and health. But most importantly, you will be touched by God with his healing power. And this is where the deep, lasting change takes place. Such change becomes the foundation from which you thrive and journey into the rest of your life toward wholeness.
